By Sarah K. HalseyThe Tattoo Numbing Cream will num the tattoo’s scars, removing ink, scarring and redness, which can be painful and even fatal for some patients, the Australian Health Sciences Research Council said.
Tattooes are a major cause of serious infections, mainly in men, women and children, the study said.
It said the cream could be used to num scars or tattoos without damaging the skin.
It can also be used for healing facial tattoos and the “pigment-like structures” of the skin, including a tattoo’s cornea, skin around the eyes, and under the eye, where it is more likely to heal.
Treatment options for tattooing can range from simple physical therapy to surgery to the use of steroids and hormones.
Tatooing is not a crime in Australia, but some people who have undergone the procedure may be more likely than others to feel stigmatised and anxious, the health council said.
“It’s an important and often overlooked area of healthcare, as people with tattoos are often treated in an overly cautious way,” Dr Susan Sorensen said.
The research council, which has more than 600 tattoo artists worldwide, said it hoped the study would help guide more people to choose a more effective tattoo treatment.
“If you’re a tattoo artist, we’d like to see more people who are going to have an ink removal procedure, to be able to get that tattoo removed, because we know that is really important,” Dr Sorenesen said, adding that people should always consult with their doctor before they try the treatment.
